I shot my friend and fellow photographer, Jessica today. She's has done some modeling with Elite Model Management so I was really excited to work with someone who has been in the biz and knows what she's doing! The idea I had for her was simple. I wanted to portray her simply and beautifully. It was not hard! Of the images below the first is her favorite the second is one of mine. Both pictures are unedited and she is wearing very little makeup. It was really hard to take a bad picture! I can't wait to edit them and get one into my portfolio! I'll keep you updated. Enjoy!

I went back and forth trying to decide whether or not to advertise my portfolio pictures on here. Final decision..... Ooooookay!! I won't show all of them so definitely stop by our show!

Section A is kind of a catch all. It includes (but not limited to) black and white, color theory, landscapes, photojournalism and dark room techniques. My 4 painting with light images made it as a series. You can find an old blog about them here.

This image was originally approved for architecture Section B. But the Mrs. H decided it's more of a fine art piece. It was kind of a bummer to loose an architecture piece but it filled another spot!

Day 1:

It was an 8 hour drive... alone... with a lot of good music and terrible weather *slow, happy, smile* I saw so many places I want to shoot on the drive back and I am looking forward to it! Well, dinner was on the stove waiting for me when I got here so I hugged the family, ate some dinner, played with children, and then went outside and was blown away! I hope I did it justice. This one is straight from the camera... I have many more and will post some of them soon after applying my newly found mad ninja d&b skills! I'll also introduce the fam and show you the house... stay tuned!

I just received the confirmation email for being accepted as a student volunteer for the Imaging USA in Nashville! This last run with the PPA International Printing contest was incredible so I can't WAIT to be helping out again! They even have Facebook page I didn't now about! I am SOOO excited! Day 3, 4, and 5!

So days 3, 4, and 5 were very similar. Lots of judging to get down to the final Loan Collection. And then, more judging to determine the Best in Show! This experience was so great! I've learned so much about printing and have tons of new ideas for my portfolio and photoshopping technique.

Amanda, Damian, Lauren and I even had a little judging of our own....

The work continued today at Gwinnett Tech during the PPA Printing Contest. Today was incredible! As volunteers we worked behind the scene with the judges in the judgment process. We loaded the image to be judged, introduced it, listened to the judges discuss and decide if the print was merit worthy or not. I think after Wednesday I'll be hearing, Merit print and Non Merit in my sleep! It was a long day but the discussion between the judging panel has unmeasurable amount of wisdom when it comes to the printing process! I am learning so much and know I will be a better photographer for participating in the event. I can not wait for the rest of this week!

I've been meaning to post about this site for a while! It's website that essentially sells one piece of technology every day. They get the items refurbished or from over stocked warehouses etc. The deals are usually pretty good. I've gotten cheap flash cards and a flip camera from them. Once the item they are selling sells out... its gone. And the site doesn't change until the next day. One day a week they have 2forTuesday (buy on get one) and the once a month they have a WOOT off. They advertise one item at a time and once that item sells out a new one pops up and so on for 24 hours! I've learned it worth the 30 seconds to check it out everyday! Soooo, check it out!

Food!

Its a long time coming but here it is, finally! I really am happy with the way my food turned out. The chef I worked with, Jay was great. I may not want to pursue a job in food photography but it was a great learning experience if a future job unfolds.

I was one of only a few students who got to shoot more than one item. I shot a salad and a soup. On both dishes we chose two different looks. Tell me what you think!

Denis Reggie (a well known photographer in Atlanta) has been working with Mrs. Harkins here getting everything ready for Mr. Heisler. I am really excited to hear what he has to say! Low key

This is the image I first posted to inform you of my low key assignment. While I really liked it, and it was in the batch I edited down to show Mrs. Harkins, she chose this one...

So this is what I turned in for the assignment. Mrs. Harkins gave me valuable advice. Lynn (my model) originally had her hand in her hair in this image. Mrs H. asked me to remove her hand and crop closer in from the right side. I think the image turned out great!

It's such a shame they made this decision. I always enjoyed and benefited from the Polaroid back when using a 4X5 camera. We will definitely miss you! Tracey Willis took the money she was saving for a house to buy as much Polaroid film as she could. Check this page out! She takes one picture with the film everyday and for a year and has made a book of it called "Day by Day." Some of the images are cool. Some of them are lacking. Either way, it's a cool idea!

For Finch last quarter we had to do a life story. I wanted to use a bunch of old pictures because me and kerri were SOOOO cute! Anyway, my great parents bought me an Epson scanner/copier/printer. It worked great for scanning old photos! I am really excited about the break and having some free time to really fix up some of these old memories!

Today in Advanced Portraiture Class Mrs. Harkins lectured about wedding photography. It is something I never thought I'd be interested in, but her speak got me thinking. If I were to approach wedding photography like photojournalism I would enjoy it much more, I think. I've only taken wedding pictures for close friends. But while looking at several wedding photographers in class, I found myself thinking.... I could do that! Dennis Reggie was one photographer she pointed out. I enjoyed his pictures very much!

I am really enjoying my final photojournalism project! As I am shooting the players, I am getting to know them. Its really fun, although they do like to pose at times. Other Thanksgiving Festivities

They call it flying. Its when my uncle Jimmy throws his youngest daughter, Clara, up in the air as high as he can then catches her. Its pretty crazy!

As we were picking pears, we used a hoe to get the fruit from the top of the tree. Jimmy threw the hoe to hit the pears to knock them out of the tree. In the process, the how got stuck in the top branches...so he had to get it down. My parents' home is extremely exciting during the holidays! After it all, we feed the rotten pears to the cows.

Cleaning your keyboard

I love photography! And in this digital age, as a photographer Photoshop can be your best friend! I use it almost everyday but it is definitely not my strength. I often have to look up help tutorials online for tips and tricks. One site I've gone to more than once a week is this one. Not only is it helpful it uses video so I can actually see the physically changing his images! Love it!

Holt Webb

Peggy and I were talking in class one day and I told her I'd love to travel in an RV across the States shooting whatever I came upon. She told me about a photographer she'd heard of named Holt Webb. This is what he wrote on his website as his mission:

"Using photography as a medium of preservation, I'm traveling across America on veggie oil, with an artist's eye and camera in hand, capturing those unique aspects of our country and culture that are in danger of disappearing within the next few generations."

I am as impressed with his photography as I am with his pro environmental morals.

Thanksgiving Festivities

Thanksgiving in Jesup is a little different than it is here in the big city! My dad raises registered Texas Longhorn Cattle. The first bull he ever bought escaped twice in the 30 hours I was home for the holiday! Once the night before Thanksgiving and again after we cooked and ate lunch.

Our neighbor, Kyle, was driving past out home and saw we needed help. So, he chased Jerry down with his Suburban. As you can see, it took an team effort but we caught him!

My dad said we'll be having beef for Christmas dinner!

The video was about James Nachtwey's career. It was really inspiring. I wondered if I'd have the courage to take chances like that if given the chance...

Lately, I've been looking at night photographers and I found a few that were very interesting. I love the simplistic, dramatics of light at night. J Wesley Brown was one I really enjoyed.

Photography Rights

I've heard stories in the news, from friends and from school mates about photographer's rights; about what is legal and what isn't. Most public places (including the people in those public places) are free game when it comes to photography. As photographers it is very important to know and stand up for our rights. I did a little research and found a page a lawyer put with a printable version of photographer rights. I found if helpful. You can find it here.

Even though this isn't about my photography, it's WAY too rad to not post it! I was digging around on the web at work and ended up on the CNN news. One of the articles in the Other News section was titled, "First images of new planets captured." I clicked and was pleasantly surprised to see pictures of the first and most recent images captured in outer space. It's incredible to see just how far photographic technology has come!

After tons of preparation and work, the Holiday Portrait set is finally finished! After having to pick up all the rubber mulch because it gave someone an asthma attack...

we replaced it with wood mulch and made the final finishing touches on Tuesday!

Fill Flash Assignment

This is my friend Dave. He is the guitarist of a 3 piece band called Miles From Pangaea. They play a great fusion of atmosphere, reggae, and metal music. This pic was taken at Sweetwater Bar and Grill. I used it for an assignment in photojournalism calling for fill flash lighting. To get this effect, I simply left the shutter open and popped my flash three times. I am really happy with the way this image turned out! Here are a few more from the same show.

My Art

Along with bring a photographer, I am an artist. I want to allow you to follow my paintings as well as my photography. This is a painting I am doing for a commission. At this point the background is finished and I am next going to glaze the horse into a more chestnut color and begin adding details. The buyer wants a heavy brushed texture so the outcome won't be perfectly realistic. My goal is to finish it by Thanksgiving so I have a lot of work to do!

My Child For a Day

Ms. Finch interrupted Ninja Dave's multimedia II class to call us all outside to see the amazing light and rainbow. It had been a while since I had seen such a rainbow. If you look closely at this picture you can see the reflection of the rainbow! The light was insane and everything was yellow! I post a few other untouched photos here.

This election will be something my generation will never forget. Our nation electing the first black President makes me proud to be an American. But there will definitely be some challenges. For my Color Theory final project, I chose night photography as my theme. I really enjoyed getting these photos once I got the hang of the process. To get these images, I left the shutter open for about 30-40 minutes. It was extremely time consuming but completely worth it!
